Today I want to share a lesson I learned (the hard way) that has become a big ally on the healing path. As usual, this one involves a mildly entertaining story of me messing up.
Before we get to that, I’d like to conjure in your mind the notion of subtlety.
In this flashy technicolor world we live in, it’s easy to become a little numb to the subtle energies your body is experiencing each moment. If there isn’t a big BAM or “aha!” in one of our 5 senses, we usually just keep chugging along.
But on the path to personal evolution and physical wellness, subtlety is everything. Your body is sending you quiet signals every moment, and if you can hear and respond to them… a whole new dimension opens up to you.
Let me give you an example.
I come from a cheese-loving family. I’m Italian on one side and Irish on the other – so dairy was a core food staple in my household. Over the course of my first 25 years, I began to notice an interesting sensation whenever I ate sharp cheddar cheese. My face would sweat and I’d feel cold in my temples.
I always assumed that everyone had this reaction to sharp cheddar cheese. After all, my whole family ate it and seemed to enjoy the other aspects of its deliciousness. I just figured we all tolerated and maybe even enjoyed its physical side effects.
One evening I was eating a cheese plate with some friends and decided to share my experience with them. “Isn’t it funny how when you eat sharp cheddar cheese, your face sweats and your temples get cold?” Everyone looked at me like I was nuts and they unanimously replied that they had never felt these things before. One of them leaned in and said, “Umm… maybe you should get that checked out.”
What had happened there?
I had assumed that my reality was shared by everybody. I had also stopped listening to the subtle feedback my body was giving me – most likely because I wanted to fit in.
It turns out that I have a food sensitivity. Dairy is not so good for this body that calls itself Nick… and my senses had been trying to tell me that for a very long time. But because I wasn’t raised in a part of the world where sensing into yourself and taking note of small distinctions in your reality was encouraged (or even accepted?), I just shrugged it off.
One of the key takeaways that I hope you harvest from my anecdote above is this – the five senses are an excellent entry point for you to start hacking your physical health.
If you take a few breaths and tune into yourself right now, there is most likely a subtle message your body is trying to send you. It could be the most minute tingle, a thought you have when you’re engaging in a specific activity, an emotion you feel when you enter a certain environment, a depletion you feel when encountering a specific person.
Some of the most important messages are ever so faint, especially at first.
Body Intelligence
Your body doesn’t always communicate in yells. I’ve heard it said that diseases often start with a whisper. If you ignore the whisper, the voice gets a little bit louder. If you continue to ignore the message that your body’s trying to tell you, it gets louder, and louder, and louder. And ultimately it becomes a roar.
And that roar can be a full blown disease.
A core pillar on the healing path is learning how to listen to these whispers. It’s up to you to start putting your ear to the ground, turning on your intuitive metal detector and dialing into these frequencies. Once you’ve got your listening apparatus calibrated properly, get ready for this next beautiful and shocking truth…
Your body has its own internal dashboard.
Yep. It’s true.
Now, most of the gauges and meters on this innate instrument panel are not fully lit up… for most of us.
But the true shamans, master healers, holy people, seers and natural mystics have a shimmering dashboard behind their eyelids. They know where there’s a disease brewing, they know where more fuel is needed, they know where energy is stagnating – perhaps from undealt with trauma. They see where nourishment is lacking – not just in terms of food, but also in the form of relationships, self-care, life purpose, and spiritual connection.
They’ve honed their sensors to the point where data is constantly showing up on those gauges. They are so attuned that they can use these powers to understand what might be brewing in somebody else, in order to help others heal.
Ok ok Nick, where do I start? Well, the first order of business is to get your internal dashboard firing again. For this, a great practice is the full body scan. Take a few deep breaths and let your awareness travel across every inch of your body, from your toes up to the top of your head. Where is there sensation or tension within you at this moment? If you are honest with yourself, there’s helpful internal data readily available to you at all times.
Do this body scan not just while you’re lying in bed at night, but also during your waking life, as you enter into different environments and introduce new stimuli (people, devices, social media posts, foods, pets, etc) to your system.
We need to get our sensors and gauges working again. This intuitive navigation system has been forgotten in our western world, but it is still alive within you. And it will meet you halfway if you reach out your hand.
A couple parting questions to help get that dashboard glowing again (don’t think too hard on these – answer them quick and honest):
1) Is there something you are doing that your body knows is not serving your overall health?
2) If you could do one thing right now to bring balance, nourishment, and peace to your system, what would that be?
Ask yourself those two questions and let the answers come without judgement or fear. Let your body do the talking. I think you’ll be surprised at what comes out.

Hello Nick,
I really enjoyed your ‘post’. Especially doing a body scan daily.
In this fast paced world, we need to take time to pause, reflect and process.
Love your FB presentations too!
